Christmas Cartoons and Questions

If you've read my blog before, you might remember this post, poking fun at some Nick Jr. cartoons. I tend to over think things, and this is where my mind goes. I probably wouldn't think about such things, but after watching something a billion times, ones mind starts to wonder. (At least mine does anyway.)

So, ladies and gentleman, I present to you my holiday edition of Cartoons and Questions. ☺

First up, Frosty the Snowman.

I love Frosty, and have watched it every year since I was little. But even when I was little, a few things bothered me.

♫Do they know it's Christmastime at all?♫
1. Why are half the kids dressed for winter, and the other half dressed for summer?

"You'll be okay. Just shake it off."
2. Why didn't anyone help the police officer, who was clearly choking to death on his whistle? I'll just assume that someone on the street saved him.

3. I'm still not completely sure how the animals started the fire for Karen to keep warm.

4. And my biggest issue by far, is why the heck did Santa drop Karen off on top of her roof, and just leave her there?! We don't all enter homes via chimney, Santa!!

"Um, you're dreaming if you think I'm leaving you milk and cookies this year!!"

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

1. Santa seems to be a jerk once again. This time to a baby reindeer. Classy, Santa. Real classy.

("Oh yummy!! Grey apples again!")
2. "Eat, Santa!" says Mrs. Claus. Maybe he would "eat" if the food and everything around it, weren't the color grey! Just a thought.
"My daddy never hugged me!"

3. What exactly was wrong with the dolly on the Island of Misfit Toys? I always thought it was because she didn't have a nose, but that still didn't seem quite right. So I did some research and discovered the writers meant for her problem to be more psychological, than physical. If you're a fan of Rankin and Bass, you should check this blog out!!

("You'll be fine! Just aim for that swimming pool down there!")
4. Remember the bird that couldn't fly, but could swim? Remember at the end, when the elves are dropping the toys off the sleigh via umbrella? Remember when the elf got to the bird and sent him down without an umbrella? Exactly.

Nestor, the Long Eared Christmas Donkey

"I'm sorry I killed your mom, Nestor."
"That's okay! You'll get yours..."
I have quite the soft spot for sweet little Nestor. But, why oh why would he choose to leave Mary and Joseph, and return to the man that kicked him and his mama out on their tooshies, resulting in his mama's death?

Maybe it's a lesson on forgiveness?

The Polar Express

I love almost everything about this movie. But did they really think Eugene, from the movie Grease, was the right voice to use for the nerdy boy?

There's simply nothing childlike about that voice!

A Charlie Brown Christmas

I don't care how much love you give it, that tree is not going to look any better than this.

That's all I've got for now!!

I really do love these Christmas specials. I watch each and every one, (and then some) every single year.

But it's fun to sit back and think, What were they thinking?!

So, what about you? Are there any holiday specials you can think of to add to this list?

And What Makes You So Special, Franklin?

Last week we were on vacation in Emerald Isle, North Carolina. I'm lucky enough to have a wonderful mother and father in-law, who treat us all to an ocean front house almost every year, for the past 5 or 6 years. The time away was much needed, but was filled with some minor set backs. My youngest daughter was sick for the first half, and I came down with a head cold for the other half. At least I had the ocean to look at while I coughed up a lung, huh?

While hanging out one day, keeping my poor Holly company, the children's show, Franklin, came on Nick Jr. This brought up a topic between my sister in-law's husband and myself, that I always wondered about the show. It was good to know that someone else wondered about the same thing. So here it is.
Franklin, the high and mighty.
What makes Franklin sooo important, that he actually has a real first name?

I mean, lets think about this for a second. His friends are just "Bear" or "Beaver" or whatever the animal ends up being. And what about the fact that all the parents are known as, "Mr. and Mrs. fill-in-the-animal name-here."  That would make Bear's full name, Bear Bear, or Snail's name, Snail Snail. And so on...

And let's not forget how we've got a whole town full of talking animals, but somehow a dog is less superior, and can't talk. Not to mention, is a pet to the talking animals. Well, run on down to the local pond, puppy pal, because I'm pretty sure it's filled with magic juice! From now on you'll be known as, Dog Dog. Only the really special animals get a real name.

I guess if I'm going to talk about Franklin, I should probably mention the other elephant in the room. And by elephant, I mean bunnies, and by bunnies, I mean Max and Ruby.

There's even a Facebook page called, Where in the H*** are Max and Ruby's Parents?!

When I first saw that on there, I was like, Yes!!! Someone else wonders about these things too!!

It just makes me crazy! And it's not just my adult mind over thinking things, because my daughter asked the same thing. And why does their Grandma act like it's no big deal? They exist, because I saw their picture on the wall! I don't know, maybe the picture is an illusion to keep the other bunnies from discovering the truth. I bet there was life insurance involved....

Ruby: "Don't these flowers look nice on mom and dad's grave, Max?"
Max:  "Flowers!!"

Maybe I over think things.....LOL

See What You Started, Fievel Mouskawitz?!

A month or so ago, the movie An American Tail, was on free HBO, so I recorded it for the kids. After all, it has always been a favorite of mine, and I like when we can bond over things that I enjoyed as a child. I absolutely love that movie! Great songs, heartwarming story, mice that I don't want to kill. It has it all!!

But here's the thing about An American Tail. I always cry!! I swear, I could watch that thing 10 times in a row, and still end up crying when he finds his family! Megan, my oldest, asked why it made me cry. I told her it's the way he whispers, "Papa..." when he hears his father's voice calling for him. It just gets me every time!

And then I started thinking about all the other cartoon movies that pull on my heartstrings. I'll be the first to admit that I tear up over just about any sappy thing, ( Like this one Oreo Cookie commercial from the 90's, where the teenage girl lets her dad twist her Oreo for her, just like he did when she was a little girl. I know, I know....pure sap.) But there's something about animated stories, that really get to me. And I swear Disney is the worst!! They like making people cry, I think.;)

So, here are some animated movies that make me feel like a crying fool.

1. Bambi. I'm good until he cries, "Mother!!" Mooooother!!" You know, I might have been OK with that part, if they would have just left it with the gunshot. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what that sound means. I was a little kid when I first saw it, and I figured it out. Scarred for life I tell ya. Scarred. For. Life.

2. The Land Before Time. And once again, the animators felt the need to kill another mother. (I'm surprised it's not a Disney movie.) Only this time, the poor little dino had to actually witness his mommy dying! Then, later thinks he sees her, but it ends up being his shadow. And the Diana Ross song at the end!!?? Are you kidding me with this?! Evil. Pure evil.

3. Dumbo. ( See, didn't I mention Disney was evil?) Oh, let's see. How about we take an elephant with ginormous ears, have everyone around make fun of him for being different, then, lock his mommy up in a cage so they can't see each other. Yeah!! That's the ticket!! Then, we'll make it so he's able to visit her, but is only able to see her trunk! And how about we have her rock him with her trunk, and play a sad song, all at the same time!! Thank God he had that mouse to take care of him for awhile. You know, the same mouse who got him, a baby elephant, drunk!! Good times. Goood times.

4. All Dogs go to Heaven. At the very end, when Charlie is saying goodbye to Ann Marie, and she says, "Charlie, I love you." It's just sad.

5. Lady and the Tramp. When Trusty is hit by the truck, and Jock starts howling. Oh, sad, sad howling. OH, and the sad dogs in the pound!! Animals make things more sad I think...lol

6. The Lion King. And once again, Disney kills another parent. Typical.

I'm thinking I should have just typed, "Every Disney movie made, before 2000." LOL

Well, I think this list has gone on long enough. The sappiness can go on and on for days.;)

What are some animated movies that make you tear up every time? Come on! Don't be shy! I know I'm not alone here!;)
